Getting started
New here? Start with these.
Who Told You That? Crafting the Life You Love is a book and digital platform by Mariyah Acka'a that helps people identify, examine, and move beyond the self-limiting beliefs shaping their lives.
It draws on the science of belief formation, neuroplasticity, and behavioural psychology — and on the author's own lived experience of loss, reinvention, and the long work of becoming more free. The result is something that takes you seriously rather than asking you to pretend things are simpler than they are.
A self-limiting belief is a mental picture assembled from fragments — a comment made once, an experience that went badly, a lesson absorbed before you were old enough to question it — then filed, unrevised, and repeated until it feels like fact.
Common examples include: I'm not the kind of person who is good at this. I have never been able to do that. This is just who I am. Each of those is a map of Uruguay drawn by someone who has never been there. The cage is built from those maps.
Most self-limiting beliefs were formed in circumstances that no longer exist. They were once rational. The question is whether they still are.
Choose Forward is the central idea of the book and platform. It is not a command to be positive, or resilient, or grateful. It does not ask you to pretend things are fine when they are not.
It is a direction — available from exactly where you are, pointing toward whoever you are still becoming. Not all at once. Not painlessly. From here. From now. One honest step.
Fear builds the cage. You didn't choose that. But from here — from now — you can Choose Forward.
Three good entry points, depending on what you need right now:
- If you want to understand yourself first: take the free Freedom Assessment. Ten questions, five minutes. It surfaces your top belief patterns and the areas of your life most affected — then sends you a personalised email sequence to go deeper.
- If you learn through doing: go straight to the Play Suite. The Inward Path is always free and takes about ten minutes. Most games work without reading the book first.
- If you want the full architecture: get the book. Twenty-four tools. Twenty-four chapters. Everything else on the platform is built around it.
No — this is not therapy. Who Told You That? is a self-guided reflection platform. It is designed to help people who are broadly well but stuck — not to treat mental illness, manage crisis, or replace clinical support.
If you are currently in significant distress, managing a mental health condition, or experiencing thoughts of self-harm, we encourage you to seek support from a qualified professional before or alongside using this platform. Our Safeguarding Policy explains our approach and includes crisis resources.
The platform is intended for people aged 16 and over.
Several things are free — always:
- The Freedom Assessment quiz and personalised email sequence
- The Inward Path and The Critic games in the Play Suite
- Creating an account and accessing your evidence file, progress tracker, and pattern dashboard
The full Play Suite (20 games) unlocks with book purchase or as a one-time £18 purchase. The Circle is not available to purchase — it is unlocked at no charge for people who consistently use the progress tracker and meet certain milestones of doing the work. Accountability Partners are in development and not yet available.
